Emma Markham
I joined the BBSRC in February 2019 and I will be leading
aquaculture. I transferred from Innovate UK, where I was running funding
competitions, most notably the Biomedical Catalyst and Women in Innovation
Award.
Previously, I worked at Addgene, a
non-profit DNA repository based in Boston USA. I was the head of operations and lead projects
to streamline their processes to facilitate scaling-up.
At university I studied Molecular Biology at Royal Holloway,
University of London and then went on to study an MSc in Human Molecular Genetics
at Imperial. I studied abroad at University for California Irvine where I
focused on the epidemiology of breast cancer. I also worked at the University
of Queensland’s Institute of Molecular Biology, where I was working on pancreas
and ovarian cancer as part of the International Cancer Genome Consortium.
I have a love for science and volunteer with Cheltenham and
Oxford Science Festivals, I am a STEM Ambassador and I run workshops for children
at an annual technology festival. I’m passionate about women in STEM, I write
Wikipedia pages for forgotten women in science history, and I speak on Women in
STEM and science career panels.
